LIHU‘E — County and contracted emergency-response personnel were kept on their toes last week with calls about injured hikers at both Kalalau Beach and the Alaka‘i Swamp Trail.
At the Alaka‘i Swamp Trail in Koke‘e State Park, hunters comforted and assisted a lone female hiker who suffered an ankle injury, a county press release states.
The unidentified hiker was rescued around 10 p.m. on Dec. 1, after hunters discovered her, called authorities and assisted her to a private vehicle, which transported her to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment.
The woman had been hiking along the Pihea Trail at around 8 p.m. when she injured her ankle.
Kaua‘i Fire Department responders from the Lihu‘e and Waimea stations responded, and hiked up the trail to meet the woman, the release states.
A 42-year-old female visitor from Prairie Grove, Ark. sustained minor injuries and was airlifted from Kalalau Beach Nov. 30, another county release states.
A tour-company pilot was flying above the area when he noticed people on the beach waving their arms, as if in distress, and notified rescue workers.
Inter-Island Helicopters’ Air 1 and KFD rescue specialists from the Lihu‘e station flew into the area to investigate the call.
The female visitor was with her husband and three children when she fell and sustained injuries to her knee.
Air 1 flew the woman to Princeville Airport where awaiting American Medical Response ambulance professionals and KFD firefighters then transported her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for further medical treatment.
