LIHU‘E — Heavy rain soaked an already saturated Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau on Sunday as forecasters issued a flash flood warning for the county through Tuesday afternoon.
The slowly approaching front from the west and abundant moisture being transported up from the south are combining to bring wet weather and thunderstorms to the western half of the state, according to the National Weather Service.
A flood watch means conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding in the area, the weather service said.
NWS guages show that more than two inches of rain fell over several areas on Kaua‘i during the 24-hour period ending at 2:45 p.m. Sunday, including 2.41 inches in Koke‘e, 2.67 inches in Kalaheo and 2.54 inches in Hanapepe.
Up to 2.5 inches of rain fell on O‘ahu — also under a flash flood watch through Tuesday — during a 12-hour period ending at 8 a.m. Sunday, according to the weather service.
Unstable weather patterns could bring more rain to the state through the rest of the week, according to forecasters.
