HANAPEPE — Three final games wrapped up the Kaua‘i Pop Warner Football League, Saturday at Hanapepe Stadium.
With the Lihu‘e Patriots Junior PeeWee cheer squad en route to Orlando, Fla., cheer duties fell on the shoulders of the Kapa‘a Eagles JPW cheer in the all-league exhibition series benefiting the Shriners Hospital.
Teams and associations were separated into East and West — Lihu‘e and Kapa‘a associations combining to make up the East, while Koloa, Hanapepe and Kekaha teaming up to form the West.
One game each was played in the Mitey Mite division, the JPW division, and the Junior Midget division to conclude the year for the young players.
“This is an exhibition game, but it does wrap up the season,” said KPWFL commissionor Mel Rapozo. “The scores don’t count towards standings. It gives the players one last outing until the season starts next year.”
Dean Pigao, one of the coaches for the Lihu‘e JM Patriots, was doing sideline duty as an official, noting that the JPW cheer was on its way to Florida where they take the stage at the National Pop Warner Cheer and Dance competition, Monday.
The Kapa‘a Eagles JM cheer squad was far from the gridiron, Saturday, holding down a table of baked goods and other snack items at the Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School craft fair and huli huli chicken pickup.
The squad said they leave for Orlando, Monday and will be on the stage for competition, Wednesday.
