Time to ‘shift gears’
In each instance I have had occasion to use the mass transit system on Kaua‘i, I have found the experience to be efficient and enjoyable.
What impressed me was the way nearly everybody said, “thank you,” to the bus driver either when getting on or off the bus.
The various suggestions being offered in extending the bus schedule or providing special services as may be plausible are excellent ways to re-order our mindsets about our personal relationships to motor vehicles.
At one time, we saw our cars as the extension of our feet or a horse we could hop upon to go wherever we wished whenever we wanted. Today, in this day and age of rising costs to travel, we need to rethink where we’re going for the hell of it.
The luxury to just cruise around is virtually unaffordable. Our highways and byways are frequently overcrowded, and the possibility of getting into an accident has exacerbated.
It’s time to “shift gears” on whether we’re going to burn gas for the hell of it or use our dwindling funds on what we label to be real and true “necessities” in life.
It’s time to put more emphasis on car pooling, riding a bike, or walking when it’s possible to get from Point A to Point B. Our public officials deserve “big mahalos” for this decision to extend mass transit services for us here on Kaua‘i.

Lepto could be a real threat
I have listened to the growl and the chatter of how Kaua‘i needs new roads, which it does, but I honestly feel we are overlooking a real threat to our Island and our Island way of life.
We know there have been many resorts built since we have updated our sewage treatment plants and the massive amounts of used waste water these small plants are asked to process will sooner or later cause a real health threat. Case in point this article from the web about Maui’s flood waters:
On Thursday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., the state Department of Health officials advised residents to take precautions when cleaning up after this big storm.
Leptospirosis is a rare, severe and contagious bacterial infection which can be found in fresh water that has been contaminated by animal urine. Because of the recent heavy rains, health officials feel there is a good chance that infected water from the mountain areas where wildlife is abundant may be in the mud and water surrounding residential neighborhoods. For this reason, residents are urged to wear rubber gloves and rubber boots to avoid exposure as the disease can enter through breaks in the skin and mucous membranes. Anyone experiencing flu-like symptoms (fever, headache, muscle aches) is urged to see a doctor immediately.
This could be Kaua‘i if we do nothing. What are your views on this potential problem?

Pink Pebbles Crew hard at work
There’s a new fad of dancing on Kaua‘i called break dancing.
It has been around since the early 1980s. But more and more, the middle and high school campuses are breeding grounds for break dancers.
I’m part of the Pink Pebbles Crew and we have hosted various performances such as talent show, parties, programs and battles (competitions against other dance groups).
I want to take the opportunity to thank the fans and supporters of Pink Pebbles Crew for being at our performances and battles to cheer us on!
Our latest Performance was at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall for the Winter Wonderland Program in conjunction with the Aloha Dance Studio. There was a full house, and the community’s cheering motivated us to work harder.
Now we know that our efforts and practice are not going unnoticed. All our practices and hard work paid off. Learning how to ace a shoulder roll, flare, invert, you name it, and we’ve done it.
It takes us one to five months to get these moves down. The most difficult part is working as a team but this hobby helps us to get past out differences. Now we are more in sync in our choreography.
We’ve come far, from nothing to something, with the help of our fans and supporters. Don’t forget to watch our future performances and look for videos of the Pink Pebbles Crew on YouTube.

Don’t want to be ticketed
Is it fair to be cited while on the cell phone off the side of the highway just off the shoulder with your engine running and gear in park with parking brake on?
Well, it happen to someone here on the island. The person was told that, “if you are on the cell phone and off the shoulder on the highway with your car engine running you are in violation.”
I thought that the idea of the cell phone ban is to stop people from using a cell phone or texting while driving. So, where’s the violation if the person is off the highway? Can someone explain? Don’t want to be ticketed on the side of the road with my engine running while answering or making a call on my cell phone.
