LIHU‘E — After a community member alleged this week that an educational sign was stolen from the Hanapepe lookout, county officials said Saturday that the sign was removed by the state Department of Transportation following a complaint received by the mayor’s office.
“The sign was erected illegally on state property,” Beth Tokioka, Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr.’s administrative assistant, said in an e-mail.
Kaua‘i resident János Samu said a community group cleaned up the Hanapepe lookout area mauka of Kaumuali‘i Highway. The area beyond the guardrail had been full of trash for years, he said.
The cleanup crew erected an aluminum sign with an educational message, greeting visitors with aloha. On or about Dec. 28, the sign, along with its concrete footing, was removed. The group had been asking for help tracking it down.
“I’m not sure if they still have the sign, but Mr. Samu may want to call Ray McCormick,” Tokioka said, referring to the head of the DOT’s Kaua‘i office.
