WAIMEA — The difference was a 16-2 run that the Red Raiders used in the second and third quarters to gain separation against the Menehune, Tuesday night at the Clem Gomes Gym in Waimea.
Kaua‘i moved to 2-1 in the season’s second round with a 62-45 win over Waimea behind a game-high 18 points from Donavan Harrison.
Bryan Andres scored 16 for Kaua‘i, while Joe Duronslet had 11. Alden Ho scored seven, Dane Bautista had five and Anthony Guerrero and Mason Manera had three and two points, respectively.
Brandon Palacio had the high total for Waimea with 12, followed by Vinda Carineo Jr. and Travis Soares with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Ariel Lahip scored four, Paul Oligo Jr. and Nikko Delos Reyes each had three and Garret Cadiente-Gushiken scored two.
With the score tied at 14-14 midway through the second quarter, Ho finished a layup off an Andres feed and was fouled in the process. He made the free throw for the traditional three-point play. Ho then knocked down a pair of free throws before Duronslet scored on a runner for a 21-14 lead, which Kaua‘i extended to 25-16 at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Harrison went coast to coast for a layup, then knocked down a 3-pointer to give Kaua‘i its biggest lead to that point, 30-16.
Having been down by as many as 16, Waimea went on a 10-2 run of its own to get back into the game at 40-32. The run included 3-pointers from Soares and Carineo, whose triple came at the third-quarter buzzer.
Leading 46-38, Kaua‘i put the game away with a 9-0 run that was capped by an offensive rebound and putback from Harrison, followed by a pair of free throws for a 55-38 edge.
The Raiders dominated in both the transition game and on the glass, outrebounding the Menehune on both ends. They capitalized on a number of second-chance opportunities, with 15 points coming directly off offensive rebound putbacks.
In the evening’s other varsity game, the Kapa‘a Warriors moved to 3-0 in the second round with a 57-44 win over the Island School Voyagers at Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa‘a.
That win keeps Kapa‘a at the top of the standings with Kaua‘i (2-1), Waimea (1-2) and Island School (0-3) following. Kaua‘i won the season’s first round.
The night’s junior varsity game was a tight one, with Waimea and Kaua‘i needing overtime to determine a winner.
In the end, it was the Waimea JV that pulled out a 34-31 win, as it held Kaua‘i scoreless in the extra period and got three free throws from Duke Yadao.
Kaua‘i’s Keoki Palau had sent the game into OT in the final seconds, knocking down the second of two free throws to even things up at 31-31.
Waimea’s Peterson Lahip led all scorers with 10 points. Yadao had eight, Chava Delos Reyes scored seven, Nohili Kahepu‘u had five and Acetyn Emayo rounded out the Menehune effort with four.

The boys are back on the court Friday night when Kapa‘a will host Kaua‘i, with JV tipping at 5:30 p.m., followed by varsity.
Island School will host Waimea in a varsity-only contest at 7 p.m.
