LIHU‘E — The Warriors were held to just 15 points in the second half as the Idaho Vandals topped UH 59-44, Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center on O‘ahu.
Hawai‘i (9-6, 0-3 Western Athletic Conference) shot under 30 percent (15-of-51) as a team for the night and was a mere 3 for 22 (14 percent) from three-point range for the game.
UH had no players reach double-figure scoring, led by Hiram Thompson’s nine points. Zane Johnson, who had been on a shooting tear over his previous handful of games, was held to seven points on 2-of-8 shooting.
Bill Amis, Bo Barnes and Vander Joaquim scored six points apiece.
Kyle Barone had a game-high 15 points for Idaho, which also got 14 points from Jeff Ledbetter.
The Vandals (8-6, 2-1 WAC) shot 44 percent (21-of-48) from the field and crushed the Warriors on the boards, outrebounding UH 40-28.
Hawai‘i trailed by five at the break, shooting 38 percent in the first half and went to the locker room chasing a 34-29 score.
But the second half provided nothing but bricks with the team going 0 for 12 from downtown and just 6-of-27 overall.
Hawai‘i had just five assists as a team and turned the ball over 15 times, though Idaho was more careless, committing 21 turnovers on the night.
After a pair of road losses to Utah State and Nevada opened up conference play, the Warriors still have a chance to get into the win column at home when Boise State takes the floor at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7:30 p.m., Saturday night.
The game will be broadcast live on KFVE, as well as ESPN 1420 AM radio.
UH will then head back over to the Mainland for a pair of conference games with New Mexico State (Jan. 13, 7 p.m. MT) and Louisiana Tech (Jan. 15, 7 p.m. CT).
