LIHU‘E — Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. signed a bill Thursday that restores funding in the various county departments and ends all county furlough days for the remainder of the current fiscal year, states a press release from the county.
The County Council approved the bill to appropriate the funds at Wednesday’s council hearing.
“I’d like to thank the County Council for handling this bill in an expeditious manner so that we can restore full services to the public,” said Mayor Carvalho.
Furloughs were implemented in July of last year as a cost saving measure for the county.
Most county offices were closed two Fridays per month from July through December, which resulted in roughly $2.3 million in savings.
The bill signed by the mayor Thursday amounted to a little more than $2.4 million and will be distributed among the county departments that would have been impacted by furloughs.
The county’s next furlough day was scheduled for today. That furlough day and all others for the remainder of 2011 have been cancelled.
