PUHI — The Kaua‘i High School boys basketball team clinched the first round Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation boys basketball league title with a solid 45-19 win over the Island School Voyagers, Monday night at Island School.
Bryan Andres, continuing his momentum from Saturday’s win at the Clem Gomes Gym where he posted 13 points, scored in all but the second quarter to finish with a game-high 14 points to lead the Red Raiders.
The game was forced after Kaua‘i sealed a 42-32 victory over Waimea, Saturday night, and Kapa‘a wrapped up a 63-41 edge over Island School.
Those results gave Kaua‘i a 4-1 first-round record and Kapa‘a ending the round with a 4-2 record to force play of the game which was rained out last week due to Wednesday’s inclement weather. Monday was designated in the KIF schedule as one of two playoff dates before the start of Round 2, which opens today.
Donavan Harrison marked 10 points in the Kaua‘i win, scoring six during the Raiders’ 14-0 first-quarter run. He scored in all but the fourth quarter when many of Kaua‘i’s reserves saw action.
Following the two scoring leaders, Nathan Wong, key in matching up against Island School’s Canaan Higa for rebounds, was joined by Aldon Ho with six points apiece.
Cerwinh Moreno finished with five points and Joe Duronslet rounded out the effort with four points, a pair in each half, but like Wong, was key on the boards and controlling the inside for Kaua‘i.
The Voyagers’ only score in the first half came on a three-ball from Lansen Eto.
But coming out of the half, the Voyagers jumped on Raider turnovers to finish the third stanza with eight points, Higa opening his scoring with a three-ball followed by Brandon Taylor with a three-point play and a bucket from J Riley Louis.
Higa continued his roll in the final stanza, running for eight points en route to his game-total 11 points to lead Island School.
Kaua‘i faces a key game tonight when it hosts Kapa‘a in the opener of the second round.
The junior varsity game tips off at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity matchup starting approximately 20 minutes following the completion of the JV game, or about 7 p.m.
Island School will make the trip out to the Clem Gomes Gym for a single varsity game against Waimea starting at 7 p.m.
