LIHU‘E — Dustin Mundon threw for no hits, four strikeouts and walked one to pick up the 10-6 win for Kapa‘a as the Kaua‘i Americans of Japanese Ancestry Baseball League opened its 82nd season, Sunday, at Vidinha Stadium.
Dustin Mundon worked through two and a third innings after Owen Koishigawa allowed three earned runs in four and two-thirds innings of work, allowing six hits, one whiff, and walking two.
But Dustin was tiring and Allen Mundon was called on to close off the game against the Makaweli Indians, throwing a single inning with no hits, striking out two, but walking five and getting three earned runs in the win as time ran out on the opener.
Micah Furtado, playing the infield for Kapa‘a, finished with two Runs Batted In in his 3-4 showing in the box, including a triple and two singles. Waylen Kupihea finished 1-3 with a triple and an RBI. Kawaihau Torio (2-3), and Ikaika Pezario (1-3) also marked RBI in the win.
Jason Miyazaki led the Makaweli win with a triple and an RBI in his 1-3 showing. Sean Jardin (1-2) and Tyren Shigematsu (1-2) also marked RBI.
Furtado broke a 3-3 deadlock in the three-run fourth inning with a two-RBI triple to center, scoring Ikaika Pezario and Kupihea, Pezario getting first on an error and Kupihea walking. Furtado crossed on a single by Torio to shortstop.
Kainoa Pezario walked, and with two outs, scored the first of four runs on a fielder’s choice on Ikaika Pezario. Ikaika scored on Kupihea’s RBI triple, Kupihea crossed on a Furtado single to leftfield, and Furtado crossed on an Allen Mundon single to center before the inning ended.
The Indians answered on its final at-bat when Kyle Romano walked followed by Scott Seriwaza. Two more walks with two outs saw Romano cross when Schyler Arakaki walked. Bradley Murayama walked to score Serizawa. Kaylen Iwai, the Makaweli closer on the mound, scored on a wild pitch before the inning ended on the Indians’ comeback effort.
The Kalaheo Farmers jumped on five runs with two outs in the first inning en route to a 15-6 win over the Lihu‘e Townies in the second of a triple-header at Vidinha.
Garren Itamura finished with two singles to power three runs across the plate to lead the Kalaheo bats, Kalaheo finishing with 13 hits in the outing. Zoom Bukoski (2-2), Jayson Koga (1-2), and Brandon Ishibashi (1-2) each added two RBI with Kaina McCallum (4-5) and Jordan Kamakeha (1-1) adding an RBI apiece in the win.
Michael Yaris worked five innings on the mound to pick up the Kalaheo win, allowing six hits with six strikeouts and walking four with four earned runs.
Lihu‘e, who finished with eight hits, saw catcher Mikey Cardinez stop to the front with a single and a double in three at-bats for two RBI. He was joined by starting pitcher Erin Doi who ended 1-4 with two RBI. Cody Bonilla, joining the Townies for the first time this year, ended with a double and single in three at-bats for an RBI along with third baseman Curtis Matsumura (1-3).
Davin Yamase notched his double in the second inning when the defending Hanapepe Rivermen notched eight runs over the Waimea Tsunami en route to a 16-4 final game.
Yamase led the Rivermen bats with a single and double in six at-bats for three RBI as Hanapepe closed the game on 16 hits to seven for Waimea.
Following him, Mason Lorenzo (4-6) and Tyrus Matsumoto (2-2) each pushed two RBIs with Justin Ganaden (1-2) and Wendal Nonaka (1-2) getting an RBI each.
Waimea’s hitting was led by Kelsey Morikawa who powered for two doubles in three at-bats. Scott Yamase (2-4) and Casey Agena (1-2) also notched two baggers.
Kellen Naka‘ahiki (1-2), Kai Reyes (1-3) and Brandon Hashimoto (1-4) pushed in an RBI apiece in the effort.
Robin Correa, working through four innings, picked up the Hanapepe win with three hits allowed while striking out five and walking three with two earned runs.
Games continue Sunday with a double-header at Vidinha Stadium starting at 10 a.m. and a single game at Hanapepe Stadium starting at 11 a.m.
