The first heats on a redesigned national-style motocross track will start at 10 a.m., Sunday, said Brian Barretto of the Kaua‘i Motocross Riders Association in a release.
Admission to the Wailua motocross track is $5 per person with children ages 5 and under admitted free. A lunch wagon and shave ice will be available to enable families to spend a day at the new track.
Barretto said the new main track is built for all riding levels, from beginners to experts, young and old, and everyone in between.
Since work started on the track by Koa Estrella and the ‘ohana from Estrella Enterprises, about 95 percent of the main track has been totally redone.
“We were planning to do changes to the track to make it safer and more fun for all levels,” said Paul Medeiros, president of KMRA.
Barretto said Estrella Enterprises spent hours on the reworking of the track, getting contributions for fuel from Ron Victorino of Garden Island Motorsports and Mark Stiglmeier of HICCI, heavy equipment by Bob Farias and Allied Machinery, and the hauling of equipment by DJS Trucking.
This does not include the countless hours contributed by KMRA officials including Medeiros, Derrick Leanio, Harley Genegabuas and Sherri Medeiros.
Barretto said some of the new features of the track include track width and a reduction in the number of jumps, which makes it more rider-friendly for ATVs and quads.
Additionally, the jumps are safer because they are Table Tops and are lower in height. The Table Tops also feature larger and a more gradual landing area to help beginnerrs.
“The changes in the track were done with safety in mind,” Estrella said. “We really wanted it to be safe so everyone could enjoy the track.”
The track was opened to riders last weekend, with good reactions from a large portion of the 50 or so riders in attendance, Barretto said.
“The new changes to the track has had some very positive reviews by many of the KMRA members,” Barretto said.
In addition to the Main Track, a Keiki Track was designed just for the young riders, Barretto noting that many of the professional racers started riding when they were as young as 3, or 4 years old.
Daryl Dabin is one of the parents who loves to watch his two young riders “tear up the little track in a big way,” Barretto said.
“The Keiki Track is always in great shape, clean and safe thanks to Daryl,” Medeiros said. “The Keiki Track, equipped with little jumps, or mounds, an uphill and downhill section, and starting gate is the perfect place to let the little ones loose. What a great way to burn out all that energy!”
Sunday’s race marks the start of the KMRA 2011 motocross racing season with nine scheduled events throughout the year.
Barretto said pre-registration for the Sunday race takes place Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the track, and is recommended for all racers and participants.
When there are no races scheduled, Barretto said KMRA extends an invitation to all dirt bike riders to come out and ride the new track on Saturdays, Sundays, and all state and county holidays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Practice fees will be collected at the gate.
