LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Lady Warriors’ season came to its conclusion with a fourth-place finish in the HHSAA Hawaiian Airlines Girls State Basketball Championship tournament after a 55-40 loss to Maryknoll in Friday morning’s Division II third-place game at O‘ahu’s Blaisdell Center.
Kapa‘a (11-5) struggled offensively the whole game, shooting 16-of-66 from the floor (24 percent), going exactly 8-of-33 in each half.
Mahea Hanie-Grace scored 15 points to lead the Warriors, while Jessilyn Aki scored 11. Reggie McCabe had eight points and Ka‘anoi Marshall scored six.
Aki led Kapa‘a with nine rebounds and four assists, also coming up with eight steals.
The two top scorers had trouble getting their offense going, with Hanie-Grace shooting 6-of-22 and Aki going 5-of-23.
Maryknoll (14-3) was led by Ashlee DeSantos, who put together a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Ashley Agcaoili added 12 points.
The two teams played evenly from the start, with a Marshall jumper knotting up the score at 13-13 early in the second quarter.
But Maryknoll took command with a 9-0 run, holding Kapa‘a scoreless for more than four minutes and took a 30-18 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Lady Warriors faced a 16-point deficit, their largest of the game, on three separate occasions in the third quarter, but fought their way back to within striking distance early in the fourth quarter, when a pair of McCabe free throws made it a 41-31 game with 6:30 remaining.
Unfortunately for Kapa‘a, it was unable to make the final push necessary, getting no closer than eight the rest of the way and seeing Maryknoll score the game’s final seven points in the last 2:16 of action.
Maryknoll comes away with the third-place finish in D-II.

All-Tournament team
Aki was one of five players selected to the D-II All-Tournament team, along with Maryknoll’s Desantos, Radford’s Korie Johnson, University’s Quynne Eharis and Moloka‘i’s Kalei Adolpho.
Katelynne Paleka-Kennedy of Kamehameha-Big Island received the nod for Most Outstanding Player.
Radford takes
D-II state crown
Top-seeded Radford survived a slow start and had a thrilling finish to its season, completing the year undefeated after a tight 43-40 win over No. 3 seed Kamehmeha-Big Island.
Korie Johnson’s layup with just seven seconds to play put Radford ahead 41-40 and Rachel Kapesi made a pair of free throws with two seconds left to create the final math.
Radford got balanced scoring with Kelsey Bash’s 11 points leading the way, followed by 10 from Johnson and nine apiece from Jemory Castro and Imani Wimbush. Rachel Kapesi added four points.
Katelynne Paleka-Kennedy led KS-Big Island with 19 points and 15 rebounds.
Scoring just four points in the first quarter, Radford faced seven-point deficits in both halves, trailing 22-15 early in the third quarter. However, a 10-0 run put it back in the mix as the two teams battled throughout the second half.
Hawai‘i Prep (12-6) was a 35-23 winner over University (13-4) in the D-II fifth-place game.
HPA got 20 points and nine boards from Leahi Lindsey, while Quynne Eharis scored 11 for University.
Division I
In the Division I state championship game, No. 1 seed Konawaena used a 6-0 run to create separation in the final two minutes and came away with a 49-45 victory over No. 3 Punahou in the finale at the Blaisdell Center.
Tied at 43-43, Misilosa U‘ulopa scored on a Dawnyelle Awa assist with 1:53 left in the game and Konawaena (17-0) held Punahou (12-3) without a field goal the rest of the way, knocking down 4-of-6 free throws to ice the state title.
Lia Galdeira had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead the top seed, while Awa had 13 and Anuhea Wall scored 10. U‘ulopa added eight points and seven rebounds.
Mysha Sataraka finished with 15 points and six rebounds for Punahou, with Hailey Ann Maeda adding 12 points and nine boards.
‘Iolani (14-4) pulled off a 54-48 upset over No. 2 seed Lahainaluna (13-2) in the third-place game.
Alex Masaquel scored 12 to lead ‘Iolani, while Kylie Maeda and Lahela Usui each added 10.
Maiki Viela had a game-high 21 for the Lunas.
Farrington (16-3), which entered as the No. 4 seed in the D-I bracket, was a 60-52 winner in the fifth-place game over Kahuku (10-11).
The All-Tournament selctions were Dawnyelle Awa (Konawaena), Maiki Viela (Lahainaluna), Hailey Ann Maeda (Punahou), Mysha Sataraka (Punahou) and Anuhea Wall ( Konawaena).
Most Outstanding Player went to Lia Galdeira (Konawaena).
