A flight school instructor spotted an injured humpback whale this morning in shallow waters off the Port Allen Airport.
The 50-plus-foot creature disappeared by 1 p.m., said Gerry Charlebois, an owner and instructor with the Birds In Paradise Flight School.
He contends that the adult humpback’s injury is the result of major blunt force trauma likely caused by a large water vessel.
“This is one of the most disturbing sights I’ve ever experienced while photographing whales,” Charlebois wrote in an e-mail to The Garden Island.
