LIHU‘E — It took an extra session to decide a winner as Hawai‘i and Nevada went back and forth for 45 minutes, with the Warriors eventually getting the best of the Wolfpack, 69-67, Monday night at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Jeremiah Ostrowski knocked down the game-winning jumper with 21 seconds remaining in the extra session.
Ostrowski scored the final four points for the Warriors, which were the only four on the night for the dual-sport star who also suited up for Greg McMackin’s football team.
The frontcourt duo of Vander Joaquim and Bill Amis did most of the dirty work for Hawai‘i. Joaquim continued his improved play with a 24-point, nine-rebound outing, shooting 10-of-14 from the field.
Amis had another double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 13 boards, while also blocking six shots.
Zane Johnson was off much of the evening but still scored 11 points with four rebounds. He was 4 for 15 from the floor, 2 for 10 from beyond the arc.
Bo Barnes scored eight, Trevor Wiseman had seven points and seven boards and Dominck Brumfield rounded out the scoring with a deuce.
Trailing 57-54 with 2:24 to play in the second half, Johnson continued to fire away despite previous misses, this time nailing a triple to even things up. Wiseman made a pair of free throws to give UH a 59-57 lead with 1:03 remaining, but then fouled Nevada’s Deonte Burton, who made a pair from the stripe to re-tie the game at 59-59 with 50 seconds left.
Johnson missed on a three with 16 seconds left and Burton’s final-second attempt did not go, sending the game to OT.
The overtime session had little scoring until Ostrowski knocked down a jumper for a 67-64 lead with 1:05 to play.
Burton stepped up again and nailed a 3-pointer to tie things up with 53 seconds left.
After Joaquim and Wiseman each missed attempts at the rim, Ostrowski gathered the ball and made the game-winner for UH’s fifth conference win.
UH moves to 14-10 on the season, 5-7 in the Western Athletic Conference.
Nevada is 10-15, 7-5 in the WAC.
