Waioli statement
Regarding John Tyler Cragg’s letter of Feb. 16, Mr. Cragg knows very well from our previous communications that the significant issues concerning Larsen’s Beach are not Bruce Laymon and public nudity but rather access to the beach and the desire of some on Kaua‘i to impose their dream of a public coastal walkway through private property. There is already public access to this beach and it is wrong for Mr. Cragg and others to promote illegal trespassing on the private property owned by Waioli Corporation in order to access the same beach. His attempt at “clarifying the underlying issue” is only ignoring the real problem. Why, Mr. Cragg, cannot nude sunbathers take the public trail to the beach and why is it necessary to trespass on private land? His simple solution seems to be that the owner of the property should simply ignore illegal and unauthorized entry on its property and let the public, whether they be clothed or unclothed, go wherever they want. Some solution to a very difficult problem!

Larsen’s response
Mr. Wilson, to state that I know very well what the significant issue is: I know what you want to dress it up as, and I know from first hand experience what your renter’s family and/or invited guests do in real life harrasment profiling nudists and/or gays legally enjoying a sunny day at Larsen’s Beach, irregardless of where they accessed the beach.
If it weren’t for this hostile, verbal threatening on the beach, I too would have been inclined to believe it was merely a private property access issue to safeguard people from grazing cows, but my own experience has proven otherwise, and it was something I needed to share given Bruce’s front page comments in TGI, for a differing view of the situation. You do well to push your side’s position as fact from your office, but there are multiple witnesses at the beach who have first-hand experience of Paradise Ranch’s bullying ways.
The issue to many is not Waioli but your current renter’s attitude and his aggressions.
Why you needed to write a response letter to TGI when Waioli was not named as well puzzles me too, unless the article on Bruce’s view was a PR move Waioli sponsored.
I have respect for Waioli Corporation and truly hope everyone concerned can “take the higher path” here. Best day to you.

Skype it, Mr. Mayor
A recent article in TGI titled “Mayor, Kauaians visiting Philippines” is alarming with the current state of the economy as it stands.
Our mayor is going on a two week trip to the Philippines, joining him on the journey are Economic Development Director George Costa and Kaui Tanaka, administrative aide to the mayor and sister city coordinator for the county.
A group of Kaua‘i residents with ties to the Philippines will also be accompanying the mayor. They include Jimmy Iloreta and Edwin Navarro, who will be representing the Kaua‘i Filipino Community Council and Kaua‘i Filipino Chamber of Commerce, and Orlando Mateo, representative of Laoag Saranay.
My question is how can the mayor and his entourage go to the Philippines for two weeks all expenses paid on taxpayer dollars when many youth programs such as “Head start” are in jeopardy for funding. Taxes for everything are on the rise, and although county furloughs are over for now, state furloughs still exist and is only a matter of time until county workers maybe furloughed again.
During these times when the state is talking about everything from a soda pop tax, to medicare cuts and increased taxes on just about everything, it’s an insult to the people.
I am sure the mayor would justify the trip by saying it promotes tourism, tourists aren’t coming because we gouge them with airport fees, car rental fees and a huge hotel tax.
A skype video conference call seems more appropriate at this time!

Civil unions, equal rights
I’m disappointed in Representative Jimmy Tokioka. He voted AGAINST the recently passed civil unions bill. Apparently he doesn’t favor granting everyone equal rights.
Senator Ron Kouchi initially voiced opposition, but when his concerns were met in the conference committee, he hid out and did not vote. Come on, Ron. Take a stand on the public record.
Fortunately, Representative Mina Morita did the right thing by voting for equality, fairness, and Justice for all.
Progress is being made in Hawai’i.

Congratulations Democrats
I am hopeful everyone who voted for a Democratic Governor are happy with your choice. You should be happy with:
1. Extra tax on beer and soda.
2. Increased tax on auto registration
3. Same sex marriage (AKA Civil Unions)
4. Euthanasia for our Kapunas with state look the other way law
5. Much more to come as there is no one to stop the insanity sitting at the Governor’s desk.
I am very hopeful that you are glad you voted for “Danny DeVito” instead the Duke.
