LIHU‘E — Shoppers at Kukui Grove Center saw a minor spectacle Thursday when Kaua‘i police arrested a teenage girl following a foot chase across the parking lot.
At about 1:15 p.m., two police officers identified the 17-year-old Hanalei girl — wanted on an outstanding warrant — near Macy’s parking lot.
The barefoot girl ran off, and the officers gave chase.
“At one point the female turned around to spray one of the officers with what was believed to be pepper spray,” a county press release states.
Police captured the girl near Longs Drugs and arrested her.
The visibly agitated teen was detained on assault of a police officer and may face other charges.
A Garden Island reporter on the scene saw the girl sprawled on the ground with scratches on her legs.
She was turned over to sheriff’s deputies immediately following booking.
The chemical agent used to spray the officer is being identified at this time. Medics checked the affected officer, who did not sustain any serious injuries.
Further information was unavailable at press time.
