LIHU‘E — The Kapa‘a Lady Warriors basketball team will be in action tonight as the second day of the 2011 Hawaiian Airlines Girls Basketball State Championships tip off on O‘ahu.
Receiving the No. 4 seed in the Division II state tournament, Kapa‘a (10-3) will battle Hawai‘i Baptist (13-1) after it knocked off Honoka‘a (8-8) by a score of 54-43, Tuesday night at Farrington High School.
The Lady Warriors will take the court at 7 p.m., also at Farrington.
Kapa‘a was among the four squads to get a bye directly into the quarterfinal round, the other three being top-seeded Radford (14-0), second seed Moloka‘i (12-0) and third seed Kamehameha-Big Island (11-4).
Tuesday’s first round games saw Hawai‘i Prep (10-5) knock off Hanalani (9-7) by a 55-36 score in the night’s first matchup at Farrington. Over at Kaimuki High School, Maryknoll (12-2) was a 46-34 winner over Wai‘anae (7-9) and University (12-2) pulled out a 55-47 win over Kalani (12-5) in addition to the Hawai‘i Baptist-Honoka‘a matchup.
Today’s three other quarterfinal games will see Radford vs. Hawai‘i Prep, Moloka‘i vs. Maryknoll and Kamehameha-Big Island vs. University.
Both semifinal games are scheduled to be played Thursday at Farrington High School, with Friday’s championship game moving to the Blaisdell Center for a 5 p.m. tip.
Kapa‘a gained its entry into the state tournament with a 63-61 win over the Kaua‘i Red Raiders in Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation championship game on Jan. 24. Senior guard Jessilyn Aki drove the length of the floor and scored a layup at the buzzer to give her team the title.
All teams involved are guaranteed to play at least two games, though the championship bracket is single elimination. Losing teams will move into the consolation bracket for further play.
In Division I action, Kaiser advanced to take on top seed Konawaena with a 58-33 win over King Kekaulike.
No. 4 Farrington will take on I‘olani after it beat Kaimuki 55-45.
No. 2 Lahainaluna will face Kapolei, which easily handled Pearl City, 63-31.
Kahuku advanced with a 46-42 win over Waiakea to take on No. 3 Punahou.
The Div. I games will be played today at McKinley and Radford High Schools, then will move to the Blaisdell Center for Thursday and Friday’s semifinal and final games.
