Shana Tafiti, a graduate of Waimea High School, was picked as the Lone Star Conference South Division hitter of the week Tuesday.
After sweeping the weekly conference awards, the nationally ranked Angelo State softball team also received national honors when Tafiti was named the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Player of the Week Wednesday.
“This award speaks volumes to what Shana did this past week and what we were able to accomplish as a team,” said head coach Travis Scott, in an Angelo State release.
Tafiti, playing third base for Angelo State University, hit .526, 10-for-19 at the Southeastern Oklahoma Invitational to help the No. 3-ranked Angelo squad to a 6-0 record last week.
The transfer from Central Arizona College finished the week with 11 runs, conked a pair of home runs and scored five times during the week, states a release from Angelo.
Tafiti had a team-high 1.000 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage last week and is third on the Belles this season with a .408 batting average, the release states.
She is the second Angelo State player to be named LSC South hitter of the week after Chelsea Walters was picked last week.
Angelo State has swept its early season competition to the tune of a 15-0 record, the second-best start in school history, to capture two spots on the LSC South.
Angelo coach Travis Scott said Tafiti hit a grand slam into the wind against Ouachita Baptist to pull the Belles back from a deficit, and against Henderson State, she pulled one out to leftfield.
Scott said Tafiti also had some nice plays at third base and is responding well to the cleanup spot in the batting lineup.
Joining Tafiti, Mary Kate McKay was named the LSC South Pitcher of the Week, the freshman hurler going 3-0 on the week and improving to 8-0 on the season.
She finished all three games, allowing just two earned runs in 21 innings of work for a 0.67 ERA. She also held the opposition hitters to a .197 batting average during the week-long tournament.
During the tournament, the Rambelles outscored their opponents 42-5 and have a 110-29 edge against their opposition so far this season.
Angelo State returns to the field Saturday against St. Edward’s for a doubleheader at the Angelo State Softball Complex.
