LIHU‘E — With one state tournament completed and the other approaching next Thursday, the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation took the opportunity of this week’s waiting period to announce its 2011 boys and girls soccer All-Stars.
The two teams, provided in an e-mail from KIF executive director Diane Nitta, were heavy on seniors and highlighted the Kapa‘a boys and Kaua‘i girls, each representing the island as conference champions.
Following its second-place finish at the JN Automotive Group/HHSAA Girls Division II State Soccer tournament, in which it lost a shootout to Mid-Pacific Institute in the championship match, the Kaua‘i Red Raider girls squad had eight players selected to the All-Star team.
Player of the Year honors went to Raider senior Saryna Garcia, who in addition to being a stopper defensively, provided Kaua‘i with an extra weapon with her extraordinary throw-in ability.
Raiders Kelsey Cadiente, senior, and Alyssa “Malu” Vegas, sophomore, took two of the forward positions for their prowess at finding the net.
Senior midfielder Malia Kagawa made the team as an all-field player who had a hand in numerous scores throughout the season and the state tournament.
Teal Basquez, Noe Tamashiro and Garcia, all Kaua‘i seniors, made up three-quarters of the All-Star defensive alignment. Tamashiro scored four goals in the D-II tournament, tying her for the division lead.
Sophomore Kawehi Louis-Diamond was selected as All-Star goalie.
Finishing the regular season 6-0-1 in her first year, Raiders head coach Reiko Yoshida took Coach of the Year honors.
The Kapa‘a Lady Warriors had four members of the All-Star team, with junior Lily Fredericksen selected at forward for her frequent scoring.
Seniors Sierra Mayer and Takara Kunioka took two of the midfield spots and senior Shannon Paleka gave the Lady Warriors a representative on defense.
The Waimea Lady Menehune had sophomore Caylee Yamamoto named as an All-Star at the utility spot.
Boys All-Stars
All 13 honorees on the boys team are in their senior seasons, with eight of them coming from the conference champion Kapa‘a Warriors.
Player of the Year was given to Kanoa Nartatez, one of the key components to the well-rounded Kapa‘a attack.
Forward Lowen Gonzales made the team as a forward, while Taylor Langstaff and Calvin Rux gave the Warriors a pair of players at midfield.
The back line included Kapa‘a defenders Hunter Rice-Hudson and Cole Pemberton.
The goalie slot went to Shane Nishioka-Healey and Max Goode, a mulit-position and multi-sport letterman, made the team as the utility player.
Head coach Kevin Cram will take his team to O‘ahu next week as the boys Div. II tournament begins Feb. 24 at the Waipio Soccer Complex. Cram continues his success by adding another Coach of the Year to his résumé.
Kaua‘i’s Chaturon Promsakhan, a dangerous attacker, made the All-Star team at one forward spot, while teammate Mason Vegas, who makes his presence known all over the pitch, was chosen as a defender.
The Waimea Menehune also had a pair of All-Stars, with forward Caleb Licke and midfielder Josh Quinlan representing the Westside, each providing important scores for the Menehune on the season.
Island School defender Logan Domingo was the sole representative from the Voyagers, showing off impressive ability throughout the year.
