KILAUEA — A smash-up between a truck and a school bus Thursday morning closed down a portion of Kuhi‘o Highway, leaving motorists stuck near the Kalihiwai Bridge.
They waited for nearly 40 minutes as crews cleared the road of the damaged vehicles, said County Spokeswoman Sarah Blane.
Police believe wet road conditions may have been a factor.
Just before 6 a.m., a red Nissan pickup, driven by a 44-year-old Kapa‘a man, headed north on the highway when it collided with the back of the school bus, a county press release said. Aside from its 56-year-old driver — a woman from Kapa‘a — the bus was empty.
No injuries were reported. The front of the pickup was damaged, but Blane said there was no damage to the bus.
Just prior to the collision, police officers were in the area directing traffic due to a separate one-vehicle collision involving another pickup truck. Authorities were on scene until the truck was removed from the roadway.
Blane said she isn’t sure with which school the bus was associated. Names of the drivers and information about the earlier collision were also unavailable.
The investigation continues.
