KOLOA — Several days after someone broke a glass door and stole nearly 100 bikinis from Sweet Bikinis store in Koloa, co-owner Adriadne Da Silva wonders how anyone could have done such a thing.
“I want to just tell those guys ‘How would you feel if your house got broken into and somebody stole all your stuff?’” Da Silva said. “Everybody on this island works very, very hard to make a living.”
Sometime between Monday evening and Tuesday morning a burglar or burglars threw a rock at the store’s sliding glass door, and got nabbed approximately 100 small and medium-sized Brazilian-style bikinis, plus as a few bikinis for children. The brand names included Sweet Bikinis, WX3 and Mar & Sais.
No money was stolen from the store, which is located at 2320 Po’ipu Road.
Da Silva became aware of the break-in when she went to work on Tuesday morning and met a Kaua‘i Police Department officer, who took fingerprints there.
“I was shocked,” said Da Silva, adding that the burglary broke her heart. “I felt that somebody had violated my family pretty much.”
KPD estimate the loss at $7,700 in women’s swimwear, a county press release stated. In addition, Da Silva said she had to replace the glass door, valued at $1,500.
Da Silva said she believes the burglar had probably staked out the store, and likely stole bikinis for personal wear or to sell to others. She said she has since begun patrolling Craigslist and other websites to see if anyone is trying to sell the stolen swimsuits.
KPD is investigating the matter.
Anyone with information about the burglary is urged to call Police Dispatch at 241-1711 or Crime Stoppers, 241-1887.
