LIHU‘E — If you are a tennis fanatic who happens to play tennis on the county’s Lihu‘e courts, you may have to look for greener pastures until the end of April.
County officials on Friday announced through a press release that the Lihu‘e County Park tennis courts will closing down for one month, starting Monday, because of scheduled lighting retrofits.
County officials announced another county facility is scheduled to begin its lighting retrofit next week.
The work also involves trenching and repairing of the courts’ surfaces, the release states.
The county awarded Paul’s Electrical Contracting a $1.1 million contract to retrofit all lights at five county facilities, including Lihu‘e County Park tennis courts, Hanapepe Stadium, Isenberg Park in Lihu‘e, Peter Rayno Park in Hanama‘ulu and Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.
“We are committed to installing bird-friendly lighting at all of our facilities in order to minimize the impacts on endangered and threatened seabirds,” said Parks and Recreation Director Lenny Rapozo, adding that there were no “takes” at any county facility last season.
He also said the shielded lights are energy efficient and designed to reduce “spillover” onto nearby homes.
“This is a very busy year for the Parks Department. We finished two big projects and currently have a number of other projects that are at various stages of construction,” Rapozo in the release.
An update on the parks master plan is underway.
Included on the list of ongoing parks’ projects are: improvements to the comfort stations at Isenberg and Peter Rayno parks, installation of basketball courts at ‘Ele‘ele Nani and Hanapepe Cliffside parks and new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant announcer’s booths at Isenberg and Kalawai parks, the release states.
Earlier this year, a major renovation of Vidinha Stadium was completed and new playground equipment was installed at Puhi Park and Oma’o Park.
