HANALEI — Dr. Melissa Shaw Greenberg, an experienced Hawaiian monk seal veterinarian, is opening a community health center for animals today on the North Shore.
Kahu Kaui Lani Kai Kahalekai recently blessed the Aloha Mission Animal Clinic at Hanalei. The clinic will offer state of the art veterinary medicine, primarily for small animals, including both conventional and natural health care, a news release states. The goal being to provide compassionate, cutting edge care for Kaua‘i’s pets.
The Aloha Mission Animal Clinic at Hanalei will offer standard services such as health checks, preventive medicine, nutritional and behavioral counseling, spay/neuter services, heart worm testing, de-worming, and more. Because of her interests and holistic approach to medicine, Shaw has completed several additional courses in state of the art, natural modalities for musculoskeletal conditions.
Shaw will also offer more aggressive therapies including non-surgical regenerative therapies such as prolotherapy and platelet rich plasma therapy, the release states. Future plans include the use of cold laser and auto-stem cell therapy.
The clinic will have a fee structure comparable to other veterinary clinics on Kaua‘i. However, because of a not-for-profit license (501c3) recently awarded from the IRS, grants will be acquired. Shaw intends to use funds from the grants as well as from private donors to subsidize care so that it is available to all pets, despite the income capacity of the pet’s “parents” or guardians, the release states. The clinic has a simple process through which persons may acquire this “subsidized” care.
The clinic is located in Ching Young Village in Hanalei. Office trailer and space for the clinic was donated by Saiva Siddhanta Church and Geoffrey Culverhouse and Michael Ching, respectively.
Clinic hours are from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with emergency care possible outside those hours. Philanthropic and volunteer opportunities are abundant. For more information, call 827-8462.
