LIHU‘E— Police have detained two students from Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School in connection with a bomb threat found this morning in a campus planter box.
Kaua‘i Police Assistant Chief Roy Asher said the children — a 11- and 13-year-old — have since been released to their parents. He added that while police recognize similarities between today’s incident and a hoax found Monday afternoon, they cannot confirm they’re related.
Both threats were hand-written notes.
Today’s note, discovered at about 8:15 a.m., indicated a bomb on school grounds, said complex superintendent Bill Arakaki. Students and staff were immediately evacuated to a field at the YMCA.
“We need to take these precautions,” Arakaki said. “This is a terrible disturbance. It’s impacting students’ education.”
The police officially cleared the school around 10:30 a.m. Returning students then attended an anti-bomb threat assembly. It’s intended to teach students the seriousness of such hoaxes.
“This is not a joke and they shouldn’t be writing any kind of note of this matter,” Arakaki said, adding it’s possible students are behind the threats.
“We may think some students are involved but we’re not sure,” the superintendent said.
Police and school officials are investigating to find out who is responsible.
