PO‘IPU — A 68-year-old male visitor from Rancho Murieta, Calif., drowned Tuesday afternoon in waters off Po‘ipu Beach, county officials said in a news release.
The man had been swimming in waters fronting the Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort at about 1:15 p.m. According to witnesses, the man looked as though he was trying to swim to shore when he began having difficulty getting through waves and currents.
Bystanders brought the man to shore and began performing CPR.
Police, firefighters and medics responded to the scene. Rescuers took over CPR but were unable to resuscitate the unresponsive swimmer.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
