The National Tropical Botanical Garden, in partnership with Kaua‘i Community College and University of Hawai‘i, will conduct a Science Teachers’ Enrichment Program on Kaua‘i from July 5–13. Science teachers selected to participate in the course have the option to apply for up to three academic credits through the University of Hawai‘i’s Outreach College. This year’s program will be led by KCC biology professor Brian Yamamoto and NTBG staff biologists.
The NTBG is mandated to serve as a resource for unique educational experiences that inspire interest in science education. This program will enhance teachers’ knowledge of current information about tropical biology and equip them with innovative techniques to teach their classes, using an inquiry-based approach. Teachers will construct instructional modules and devote significant time to preparing “science kits” consisting of classroom manipulatives and inquiry-based learning experiences that will be made available to all teachers and students in the State of Hawai‘i and to be used nationally.
Applicants must submit: two letters of recommendation, complete curriculum vitae and a non-refundable $40 application fee in the form of a check or money order made payable to the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Visit courses.ntbg.org for details and an application. The application deadline is April 29, 2011 with notification of acceptance on May 6, 2011.
Participants will be responsible for their own airfare to/from Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i. NTBG will cover the cost of accommodations, lunch and ground transportation on program days; course materials; and a $700 stipend awarded upon successful completion of the course.
All high school and middle school science teachers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and apply directly to: Science Teachers’ Enrichment Program c/o Education Office, National Tropical Botanical Garden, 3530 Papalina Road, Kalaheo, HI 96741. Call 332-7324 ext. or e-mail education@ntbg.org for more information.
