KAPA‘A — The Waimea Menehune remained unbeaten by sweeping their doubleheader with the Kapa‘a Warriors, Saturday at the Ron Martin Field in Kapa‘a.
Waimea (4-0-1) came away with its wins by scores of 9-4 and 7-0.
In the morning opener, Kaimana Perreira-Alquiza got the victory, going 4.1 innings and giving up three runs — just one earned — on three hits, while walking four and striking out four.
Shylen Keuma came on to finish the game and was very effective on the mound, going the final 2.2 innings and giving up just one unearned run on one hit, while striking out four and walking none.
He helped the team’s cause offensively, as well, going 2 for 4 with a triple, a run and an RBI.
Mikeo Rita scored three runs while going 1 for 3 and Chyson Soares scored a pair with a 1 for 2 day.
Bronson Aiwohi led the Warrior offense, going 3 for 4 with a triple, three runs scored and an RBI. He drove in Zavier Cummings who scored the other Kapa‘a run, while going 1 for 2 at the dish.
Nick Tabura took the loss for Kapa‘a, going 5.0 innings and giving up six runs — three earned — on three hits, walking five and striking out three.
Kalen Iwai threw the final 2.0 innings and allowed three earned runs on two hits, walking two Menehune batters.
Waimea scored two in the top of the first, but Kapa‘a responded with a run in the bottom half. The Menehune then expanded to a 5-1 lead with three runs in the top of the second.
Each team’s bats were silenced until Waimea added one in the top of the fifth for a 6-1 lead. Kapa‘a tightened things up with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to 6-3.
But the Menehune scored three times in the top of the sixth to create their cushion and held on for the 9-4 win.
The second game was all Waimea as Menehune starting pitcher BJ Freitas threw 6.0 innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out three to pick up the win.
Keuma was key again, going 2 for 3 with a double, a triple, a walk, two runs scored and three RBIs.
Jordan Kamakea also went 2 for 3 with a walk and a run scored, while Travis Soares was 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
Aiwohi got the start for Kapa‘a and took the loss, despite giving up just one earned run in 4.0 innings of work. Kysen Lopez went the final 3.0 innings, giving up four runs while striking out three.
The two Kapa‘a pitchers each had a hit off Waimea, the only hits the Menehune surrendered.
Kapa‘a (0-4) now has the week off as Waimea will host the Kaua‘i Red Raiders (1-1-1) in a single game, Wednesday at Hanapepe Stadium.
A Waimea win would clinch the first round of the KIF season, while a Kaua‘i win would keep its hopes alive. The Raiders and Warriors had a doubleheader rained out on March 5. Those two games would impact the standings if Kaua‘i hands Waimea its first loss.
First pitch Wednesday is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
