LIHU‘E — Travel to and from California will become much easier starting next week with the launch of Alaska Airlines’ first-ever nonstop flights between Lihu‘e Airport, the Bay Area and Silicon Valley.
Nonstop service between Lihu‘e and San Jose International Airport will begin today. Service between Lihu‘e and Oakland International Airport will begin Monday.
Passengers on the inaugural flights will be treated to Hawaiian music, hula and Kaua‘i Coffee at the boarding gate and greeted with the fresh flower lei of Kaua‘i upon arrival.
Alaska Airlines flight 863 will depart San Jose Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 7:50 a.m. and arrive on Kaua‘i at 10:29 a.m. Return flight 868 will depart Kaua‘i on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:20 p.m. and arrive in San Jose at 10:40 p.m.
Flight 879 will depart Oakland Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:50 a.m. and arrive on Kaua‘i at 10:29 a.m. Return flight 886 will depart Kaua‘i on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 2:20 p.m. and arrive in Oakland at 10:40 p.m.
Alaska will operate the daily Kaua‘i flights using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft seating157 passengers, with 16 seats in first class and 141 seats in coach class.
Altogether, the combined service from San Jose and Oakland will add more than 57,000 seats annually to Kaua‘i’s tourism economy, a press release said.
During 2010, airline services from the Bay Area were either added or expanded on Hawai’i’s neighboring islands, Hawai‘i Tourism Authority’s January report says.
New direct services were added to Maui’s Kahului Airport from San Jose and Sacramento, and to Kona Airport from San Jose.
Service was expanded to Honolulu from San Francisco and San Jose and to Kahului from Oakland.
