LIHU‘E — The Hinkel sisters, Rachael and Madisson, set the pace for the Kapa‘a girls while picking up a consideration time for their respective events, Thursday at Vidinha Stadium.
Both the Kapa‘a girls and the Kapa‘a boys — paced by the consideration run by Darren Taylor — topped the standings at the end of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation qualifying meet.
The Warrior wahine edged out Kaua‘i with 92 points to Kaua‘i’s 85 points following the running events only. Waimea followed with 63 points and Island School finished with 38 points.
The boys race was even closer, Kapa‘a chipping out a two-point lead over Kaua‘i, 95 points to the Red Raiders’ 93, following the running events only. Island School, getting state times from Pierce Murphy, finished with 42 points over Waimea’s 36 points.
Murphy, competing in three events, picked up first places in all three, but earned an auto time in the Boys 1600 Meter Run when he tripped the clocks at 4:16.99, bettering the auto standard of 4:19.64. In the Boys 800 Meter Run, Pierce finished with a 2:07.47 run, besting the consideration standard of 2:08.34.
Kapa‘a’s Darren Taylor, edging out Kaua‘i’s Darren Acoba by a scant .12 seconds in the Boys 100 Meter Dash, earned a consideration run at 11.44, finishing spot on with the consideration standard.
Kaua‘i’s only state run came from Joshua Herr, finishing the Mixed 3000 Meter Run on a 9:51.89, besting the consideration standard of 10:08.24, but falling short by about 12 seconds of the auto standard of 9:39.44.
The Hinkel sisters played second to Kaua‘i’s Kawehi Louis-Diamond in the hurdles event, but spurred on by the Red Raider sophomore, both pocketed consideration runs.
Rachael finished with a 17.18 run in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles, besting the consideration standard of 17.44, and Madisson took the silver in the Girls 300 Meter Hurdles on a 51.39 run, besting the consideration standard of 51.24.
Louis-Diamond, pocketing gold in both hurdles event, earned an auto time in the 100 Meter Hurdles with her 16.07 finish, bettering the auto time of 16.64, but in the 300 Meter Hurdles, her 50.65 run fell short of the auto time of 49.14.
The sophomore did not stop there, taking the No. 2 leg of the Kaua‘i Girls 4×100 “B” Relay team which earned an auto state time with its first finish of 51.86, getting past the auto standard of 51.94.
The Kaua‘i Girls “A” 4×400 Relay team also pocketed a first finish on a 4:35.67 run for a consideration time (4:35.84).
Kelsey Cadiente made her debut on the track, taking first in the Girls 100 Meter Dash on a 12.99 run, falling short of the auto standard by .05 seconds, but easily getting consideration (13.24).
The next KIF qualifying meet will be held on March 24 starting at 4:30 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium. Due to spring break, there will be no meet next Thursday.
