LIHU‘E — The District Council of the Democratic Party for District 14 has selected three candidates to fill the seat vacated by state Rep. Hermina Morita.
Chosen from a field of eight, the council picked Dr. Neil Clendeninn, Foster Ducker and Derek Kawakami.
The candidates submitted letters of interest, resumes and detailed written responses to questions related to their positions on current issues and bills pending in the Legislature as well as support for the party platform and their position on bills submitted by Morita during this session.
The council met Saturday at the Anahola Community Center and conducted interviews of each of the eight candidates. The council then met to select the three candidates by secret ballot.
Candidate names will be submitted to Dante Carpenter, state party chair, and forwarded to Gov. Neil Abercrombie for final determination. State law allows 60 days for the governor’s selection.
The chosen candidate will serve the remainder of Morita’s term, which ends in 2012. District 14 covers Hanalei to Waipouli.
Morita vacated her seat March 14 after the state Senate confirmed her to serve as Public Utilities Commissioner.
See an upcoming edition of The Garden Island for more information about the three candidates selected.
