KAPA‘A — Walkers are still able to register for the Multiple Sclerosis Walk on Saturday, said Joy Ortiz-Zimmer of the MS Society.
Cost-U-Less of Kapa‘a will be assisting at the Saturday walk with about six of its associates and their families, said Sherry Moniz, Cost-U-Less manager.
The effort is in addition to the more than $1,000 the store turned over to Laurie Weber and Ortiz-Zimmer Tuesday morning after accepting contributions from customers over a period of almost a month.
“It’s pretty easy for customers to help with the fight against multiple sclerosis,” said Holly Walker, the front end supervisor. “We have the little footsteps that have the UPC code printed and customers simply designate how much they want to help with a dollar being the minimum pledge.”
Moniz said the spearhead behind the cashiers’ push for MS is Sharon Silva of Wailua who was very successful in communicating to customers the need to help in the fight against MS.
“Sherry is the one who made it happen,” Silva said. “She got the idea of helping with a community event and communicated it to the supervisors who, in turn, told us. It was truly a team effort.”
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease which attacks the central nervous system made up of the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves, states the MS Hawai‘i website.
Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision.
The progress, severity and specific symptoms are unpredictable and vary from one individual to another.
Registration for the MS Walk can be done by visiting www.mshawaii.org, or between 4 and 5 p.m. Saturday at the Kapa‘a Beach Park, Ortiz-Zimmer said.
The walk starts at 5 p.m.
