LIHU‘E — Bags, bags and more bags will compliment high tea when doors to the second annual “Passion for Purses” open at 1 p.m., May 1, at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort.
“We weren’t even closed at the 2010 event and people were asking us to host another event,” said Mary Navarro of Hale ‘Opio, the beneficiary of the bag and high tea event. “With that kind of response, how can we not do it again?”
Bags and “fillings” have been flowing into the Hale ‘Opio office and Navarro and her staff have been busy pairing the fillings with the appropriate bags.
“This is the fun part,” Navarro said. “We have to be creative in coming up with the bags and its fillings. In some cases, we go by color, while in others, there is a theme.”
She said last year, they received a bag from the Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Club which contained two rounds of golf, golf balls, a women’s golf shirt, and more.
She noted a cat carrier lent itself to things feline and a beach bag was naturally paired with a beach towel and accessories.
“This year, we have a Children’s section with a Frog container which can be used for children’s clothes and other things,” Navarro said. “Kukui‘ula also had a lot of its vendors participating, so a section of the Silent Auction will be devoted to Kukui‘ula so everyone can be grouped together.”
In addition to the silent auction, there will also be a live auction with fire fighters from the Kapa‘a fire station assisting in displaying and, in some instances, modeling, Navarro said.
The response from the community has been great, she said.
“We’ve gotten contributions from the major hotels, Aunty Lilikoi, Island Soap and Candle and King Auto Center,” Navarro said. “There will be a lot of items on the silent auction, the live auction and more for the lucky numbers.”
She said although organizers set a deadline for contributions, they will still accept bags and fillings.
Ron Mizutani returns as the emcee for the day which will open with Lady Ipo Kahaunaele-Ferreira offering the blessing followed by entertainment from local groups which will fill the room.
Guests will be greeted by specially-created small sandwiches called canapes and petite desserts to compliment the tea service which starts at 1:30 p.m.
“All of these will be on tiered display and should be very impressive,” Navarro said. “We had a tasting earlier and everything tastes wonderful.”
Tickets for the event are $40 for the limited seating event, and can be purchased online at www.haleopio.org, or by calling 245-2873 ext. 222.
Hale ‘Opio is a nonprofit organization serving youth and families on Kaua‘i since 1975.
