LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i County Council members today unanimously chose KipuKai Kuali‘i to fill former Councilman Derek Kawakami’s seat.
Kuali‘i was runner-up in the November election, finishing eighth overall.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie appointed Kawakami to fill state Rep. Mina Morita’s seat in the Legislature. She left her long-time position as 14th District representative to serve as chief of the Public Utilities Commission.
County officials have said privately that as many as nine residents applied for the job, but the names of the other candidates were not disclosed today.
The term for the vacant seat on the seven-member legislative body expires Dec. 3, 2012.
