HONOLULU — The University of Hawai‘i Rainbow Wahine softball team (30-13, 8-4 WAC) returns home to host a crucial Western Athletic Conference series against Boise State (26-15, 9-3 WAC), states a release from the UH athletic department.
The Broncos are in third place and one game ahead of UH in a tight WAC race. The series will begin with a single game Friday at 6 p.m., followed by a doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Saturday. During the doubleheader, UH will wear special pink uniforms in support of Under Armour’s “Power in Pink” campaign for breast cancer awareness.
The ‘Bows are coming off a 2-1 series win over Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. Hawai’i shut out the Lady Techsters in the first two games, 6-0 and 4-0, before falling in the series finale 1-0 on a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Senior right fielder Jenna Rodriguez accounted for seven of UH’s 10 runs scored on the weekend. She went 3 for 8 with two home runs, three runs scored and six RBIs.
Center fielder Kelly Majam led UH went 5 for 11 with a double and an RBI, while junior left fielder Alex Aguirre got back on track, going 4 for 9.
The pitchers continued their strong performances. Junior Stephanie Ricketts went 1-1 with a one-hit shutout in the first game, but fell in the second game 1-0. Reigning WAC Pitcher of the week, sophomore Kaia Parnaby, fired a four-hit shutout and tied her career high with 12 strikeouts in her appearance.
For the season, sophomore shortstop Jessica Iwata leads Hawai’i with a .308 average, 11 home runs and 35 runs scored. Freshman catcher Sharla Kliebenstein is tied for the team lead with Iwata in home runs and has driven in a team-high 34 runs thus far. She is tied for second with Majam in runs scored with 28 and is also second with seven doubles.
In the circle, Ricketts remains the anchor of the team. She is 18-10 overall and 5-3 in the WAC. In 186.2 innings of work, she has a 1.57 ERA and 207 strikeouts to 36 walks. She has tossed eight shutouts and 25 complete games.
Parnaby has an overall record of 11-3 and is 3-1 in conference action. In all games this season, she is carrying a 0.99 ERA with 22 walks and 115 strikeouts with four shutouts and 13 complete games.
‘Bows baseball welcomes Valpo to Manoa today
HONOLULU — The University of Hawai‘i baseball team (21-15) takes a break from Western Athletic Conference play to host Valparaiso University in a three-game series, states a release from the UH athletic department. The games will be played today, Friday and Saturday, each at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
In all three games of the series, the ‘Bows will be wearning pink uniforms to also support the “Power in Pink” campaign for breast cancer awareness.
Kolten Wong leads the Rainbows and is fourth in the WAC with a .383 batting average. He also has six doubles, one triple and is tied for second in the conference with five home runs.
Junior Matt Sisto (3-4) has come on as the No.1 starter, currently boasting a 2.10 ERA good for second in the WAC. He also has a team-best 42 strikeouts. Freshman Jarrett Arakawa was the No. 2 starter last week versus Louisiana Tech, allowing just one run on four hits in UH’s 10-2 win.
Valpo is second in the Horizon League with a 9-3 record. Hawai‘i is first in the WAC at 7-1.
