NAWILIWILI — The Kauai High School tennis program celebrated a 4-1, 4-1 sweep over the Island School program, Saturday at the Kaua‘i Lagoons tennis courts.
Sam Dunham, the Island School No. 1 Boys Singles, had a slow start against Otis Llewellyn, taking the match 6-4, 6-0.
Voyager Meghan Perius teamed with Madison Duarte to defeat the Red Raider pair of Jennifer Grady and Jasmine Ikeda on the Girls No. 1 Doubles court. The Island School pair won, 6-1, 6-0 for the Voyagers’ only win of the day.
On the Boys No. 2 Singles court, a pivotal third game swung in favor of Kaua‘i’s B.J. Kai who overcame Ryan Perez in three, 6-7(7-2), 6-4, 7-6(12-10).
Matthew Kanna and Jerik Centeno, playing on the Kaua‘i No. 1 Doubles court, defeated Island School’s Jeremy Randolph-Flagg and Logan Domingo, 7-6(7-4), 6-0 while on the Kaua‘i No. 2 Boys Doubles arena, Kaua‘i’s Lance Matsumoto and Rad Floria handled Dylan Morrison-Fogel and Garret Beyer, 6-1, 6-2.
Kaua‘i’s Matthew Mizukami teamed with Kevin Jian to defeat the Island School duo of Aiden Dungan and Ben Steuri, 6-1, 6-1.
Stephanie Steuri, Ben’s sister, teamed with Tessa Mason on the No. 2 Girls Doubles court, but after getting past Kari Noe and Raisa Carlos, 6-1, the Noe/Carlos pair rebounded to take the remaining sets, 6-0, 6-3.
Kaua‘i’s team of Jaimee Gali and Gilian Gregorio needed three sets to get past the Island School pair of Joy Claypoole and Lauren Spears, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on the Girls No. 3 Doubles court.
Kaua‘i Girls Singles gave up just one set in two matches as Sarah Kukino defeated April Oo, 6-0, 6-0 on the Girls No. 1 Singles court and Shay Orial downed Haley Uliana 6-1, 6-0 on the Girls No. 2 Singles court.
Kaua‘i High School also prevailed in its exhibition matches, John Quisel and Justin Fujikawa teaming to defeat Island School’s Keoni Boemer and Kyler Dabona, 8-3.
Noe Murray teamed with Danika Thompson to get past the Island School pair of Uliana and Alyssa Medd, 8-4.
No results from the Waimea at Kapa‘a matches were available at press time, the Kapa‘a athletic trainer Sam Henriques noting their matches turned into a marathon seven-hour event.
Kaua‘i High School will travel to the Hanapepe tennis courts, Saturday when Waimea hosts the Red Raiders. Island School will travel to the Kapa‘a campus for the final scheduled matches in the KIF tennis calendar, both matches starting at 10 a.m.
The two-day state qualifying matches start Apr. 21 and 22 in Po‘ipu, the leaders heading to the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships on Maui, May 5 through 7.
