HANAKAPI‘AI — The Kaua‘i Fire Department concluded its search for a missing swimmer over waters off of the North Shore at approximately 11:45 a.m. Saturday, a county news release states.
The 63-year-old man from the Czech Republic was swimming with friends in waters off of Hanakapi‘ai Beach — a remote stretch of sand two miles from Ke‘e Beach where the highway ends. He was reported missing by a hiker just before 1 p.m., Thursday.
KFD, the Kaua‘i Police Department and the U. S. Coast Guard assisted in the sea-based and aerial searches on Thursday and Friday in an attempt to locate the missing man, the release states. The search was scaled back to aerial Friday afternoon and continued from 8 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday with no success.
No further search efforts are planned at this time, the release states. The man was not traveling with family and his name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
