PO‘IPU — Clifton Callejo and Ka‘imi Miyashiro each shot a 95 and Camden Nakashima fired a 96 to lead Waimea boys to its first Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf match, Saturday at the Po‘ipu Bay Golf Course.
Winds which picked up overnight from Friday did not hamper the Menehune who finished with a team total 390, three strokes ahead of Kaua‘i’s 393 and Kapa‘a’s 413.
Following the three Waimea leaders, Ken Morikawa fired a 104 for the team scoring.
Saturday’s round marked the end of the KIF golf season, and despite finishing with its second runner-up berth, Kaua‘i boys finished the season in the leader’s position with 16 points.
The Kaua‘i High School girls, while not posting a team total following Saturday’s round, finishes the season with two points, the only girls team in the league.
Kapa‘a boys, marking its first finish two weeks ago, marked its first third place, Saturday. But that did not budge the Warriors from its season second place finish with 12 points.
Waimea finishes the season in third with eight points.
Kaua‘i’s Kelli Oride finished with a three-over par 75 to top the girls, followed by Taylor Viquelia (84) and Daezsa Tomas (87).
Waimea’s Mariah Paiste (90) was followed by Kawena Warren (119) and Kapa‘a’s Meleane Moala (124).
Oride set the pace over the overall girls individualists with an average of 73.25 over four games followed by Tomas (86.20/5), Viquelia (81.60/5), Paiste (90.83/6), Warren (116.5/6) and Moala (149.2/5).
Vinda Carineo fired his season-best 92, joining Derek Callejo (106) and Tresten Nakashima (116) as other Menehune on the course.
Earlier in the day, the Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a coaches said they were going to rearrange their scoring players.
Kaua‘i’s top scoring golfer became Kai Adachi, firing an 83 to lead Kaua‘i golfers followed by Logan Keeler (101), Vance Tokita (102) and Kenneth Chun (107).
Other Red Raider golfer on the course included Justin “Pono” Tokioka firing the best round of the day, a one-over par 73 followed by Reyn Morioka (82) and Braeden Robley (87).
Mitchel Alves topped the Kapa‘a scoring at 101 followed two strokes back by Sage Lane and Kawika Wellington tied at 103. Anthony Aiwohi rounded out the team scoring at 106.
Kenji Miyata fired the best round for Kapa‘a with a one-over par 73, a tie with Tokioka. He was followed by Justin Uegawa firing an 86, Jordan Guerrero finishing with 89 and Daniel Sanchez ending with a 129.
Weston Moniz, the Warriors’ strong team player, did not participate in Saturday’s round.
Miyata’s tie with Tokioka during Saturday’s final round came a little late as Tokioka holds a 73.25 average over four matches to lead the boys individual standings.
Miyata follows a stroke back with a 74.25 average followed by Robley (78.50), Morioka (80.75), Moniz (82.00), Uegawa (83.00), Adachi (84.25) and Miyashiro (89.25).
Saturday marks the first of two qualifying rounds for the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association state championships.
The first group tees off at the Wailua Golf Course starting at 12:06 p.m.
