HANAMA‘ULU — A lot of community service and an outstanding grade point average can go a long way.
Four Key Club graduating seniors from Kaua‘i High School were awarded scholarships for their accomplishments during the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i meeting, Tuesday at the Hanama‘ulu Cafe.
David Ochoco and Sheri Jian were awarded $1,000 scholarships each, and Kellie Kurasaki and Kelli Oriden were awarded $500 scholarships each.
“All recipients dedicated hundreds of hours of community service throughout their high school careers while maintaining grade point averages above 4.0,” said Kiwanis member Scott Sato. “They have truly practiced the Key Club motto of ‘Caring — Our Way of Life.’ The Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i is proud to award scholarships to these fine individuals to further their education as they continue to make Kaua‘i proud.”
Ochoco, the Division 22, State of Hawai‘i, Lt. Governor, is aiming toward a field of study in Aeronautical Science with hopes of becoming a professional pilot.
The son of Ric and Tracey Ochoco of Lawa‘i, David will be heading to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott Campus.
Jian, the daughter of Zhi Yang and Hui Hong Jian of Lihu‘e, is contemplating her future path, but plans on entering the George Washington University. She served as the vice-president of service for the Kaua‘i High School Key Club.
Kurasaki, the daughter of James and Laura Kurasaki of Koloa, will be heading to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa as a Regents Scholar.
The vice-president of membership for the Kaua‘i High School Key Club is aiming for a field of study in Pre-Med (Biology).
Oride, the daughter of Dr. Michael and Gail Oride of Lihu‘e is planning on attending the University of Notre Dame on a Golf Scholarship with a field of study in Business.
The top female golfer in the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation golf league is the vice-president of operations and fundraising for the Kaua‘i High School Key Club where she was heard on Kaua‘i’s radio airwaves promoting one of the community’s nonprofit service agencies.
The Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i sponsors the Kaua‘i and Kapa‘a High School Key Clubs and proceeds from the recent highly-successful French Toast Breakfast help generate funds for the scholarships the club presents each year to graduating high school seniors.
Scott Nonaka is the current president for the Kiwanis Club of Kaua‘i which meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at the Hanama‘ulu Cafe starting at 5 p.m.
