LIHU‘E — It did not take Stanton Pa three minutes to fill a wagon with $500 worth of groceries, Saturday at the Lihu‘e Big Save.
Pa was one of the finalists for the $500 shopping spree awarded during the Contractors Association of Kaua‘i Home Show which ran last Friday and Saturday at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall.
During the event, attendees to the expo received a form from the Key Club of Kaua‘i High School volunteers, and during the tour through the many exhibitors and vendors, could have the form signed.
Completed forms were eligible for the shopping spree and the finalists were selected through a random drawing of all forms following the home show.
Pa was joined by Kekoa Dizol and Willette Jimoan, Saturday morning at the Lihu‘e Big Save with only one finalist getting the honor of shopping.
Matt Taba, president of the CAK, officiated at the drawing of slips which would determine the appropriate prizes — a $50 gift card from Big Save, a $100 gift card from Big Save, and the $500 shopping spree.
Dizol ended with the $50 gift card and Jimoan, the $100 gift card, setting the stage for Pa, who had already anticipated the spree.
The aisles cleared and with Taba tending to the shopping wagon, Pa headed right to the canned salmon, scooping armfuls of the delicacy into the wagon.
“Follow me,” he barked to Taba. It was on to the fresh meats, but stopping for a couple of scoops from the frozen seafood section.
“Follow me,” he said, trotting to the coffee aisle where more armfuls of packaged coffee tumbled into the wagon. “I like coffee.”
Gary Furugen of Big Save chuckled as Lagrimas Villon, the store manager, said he had more than $500 which meant being selective of which items from the basket would come across the cash register.
“It was the coffee,” one of the Big Save packers said, using empty cardboard boxes to hold all of Pa’s selections. “Coffee is real expensive so it doesn’t take much for the total to add up.”
Furugen said the public is invited to the annual Easter egg hunts at either the lawn of the Historic County Building, or the Waimea Canyon Park this Saturday starting at 9 a.m.
While the hunts are for children, adults are welcome to enjoy the festivities with the youngsters.
Big Save stores throughout the island are sites were people can pick up application forms for the Hawai‘i Hotel and Lodging Association, Kaua‘i Chapter 2011 Visitor Industry Charity Walk.
The walk takes place May 14 starting at 7 a.m. and following the walk, a deserving fundraiser will be treated to a Big Save shopping spree as well.
