The sugar plantation is gone, but the legacy of McBryde Sugar lives on in the McBryde Federal Credit Union, which celebrated the grand opening of its new office, Monday.
Taking over the location formerly occupied by the Westside clinic and Finance Factors in the ‘Ele‘ele Shopping Center, the newest location, managed by James Fuji, is situated between Toi’s Kitchen and the Big Save store.
Keith Smith said the McBryde Federal Credit Union was started on Apr. 11, 1938, by workers from the McBryde Sugar Company.
“For 60 years, the MFCU served McBryde workers and their extended families,” Smith said. “In 1998, the credit union received approval for community charter from the National Credit Union Administration.”
This enabled the credit union to accept membership from the community residents and in 2009, MFCU entered the national spotlight when it was selected as one of the top 10 credit unions in America, Smith said.
Today, following its 73rd anniversary, the MFCU serves the community of Hanapepe and ‘Ele‘ele with more than 3,000 members and more than $70 million assets.
Any person who lives, works, or worships in the Hanapepe-‘Ele‘ele area, or has family members in the McBryde Federal Credit Union, is eligible for membership.
