LIHU‘E — A full fight card is on tap Friday night when Kaua‘i Knockout Championship II presents Mortal Kombat at the War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
Eleven fights are currently scheduled, with one of the main attractions surely to be the debut in mixed martial arts for pro surfer Dustin Barca.
The Northshore rider, who has been a pro surfer for 10 years now, will be going up against Micah Ige in an MMA contest.
In an interview with MMA Hawai‘i’s Robert Fain, Barca said that he has been doing Jiu Jitsu since he was 14 years old. Since his father was a Karate instructor, he was always around the sport.
After four years of Jiu Jitsu training, he began learning Muay Thai and then had an eye on the MMA world.
“It was a secret dream for a long time,” he told Fain.
Going into his fight against Ige, a veteran of 10 MMA contests, the newcomer said he likes the underdog role.
“I just want to compete and see where I’m at,” he said.
Asked for his biggest influences in MMA, he named Anderson Silva and BJ Penn because “they’re the baddest and classiest.”
Each fight will feature a Kaua‘i fighter taking on an outer-island fighter.
The event weigh-in will take place at 7 p.m. tonight at the parking lot of Rob’s Good Times Grill.
Tickets for Friday night can be purchased at Da Booze Shop in Waimea, Kujo’s in Kalaheo, Kama‘aina Surf & Sport in Lihu‘e and Work it Out in Kapa‘a. Tickets are $30 for general seating, $40 for premiere seating.
Doors will open Friday at 5 p.m.
