LIHU‘E — Leila Hurst went out to California for the Volcom Qualifying Series Championships in Newport Beach, then flew back home to Kaua‘i Sunday night with the Girls title and $4,000 in prize money.
Leila scored a 13.60 in the final heat, dominating the session with the top two scores among the four finalists. A 7.27 on her second ride put her in command, then a 6.33 all but sealed the deal.
Erica Hosseini (9.16), Kulia Doherty (8.96) and Amy Nicholl (7.50) rounded out the top four.
In the opening round, Leila started with a first-place finish, scoring a 9.57. She followed that up with another top score in her quarterfinal heat, an 11.67 for the second-highest total of the round.
In the semifinals, she took second (10.73), just behind first-place finisher Nicholl (11.23), before the final heat provided the title.
Following the three-day event, Leila flew back to Kaua‘i to be in school for her final week as a Kapa‘a High School student, before this weekend’s graduation.
California’s Andrew Doheny took first in the Pro-Am division, while Ian Crane, also from California, won the Juniors.
The Grom event was won by California’s Kanoa Igarashi, while O‘ahu’s Kalani David took third.
Waialua’s Barron Mamiya, 11, won the Squids event, while Australia’s Chippa Wilson won the Air.
