LIHU‘E — The 2011 Hawai‘i Surfing Association Skull Candy state championships were held the first week in May, at O‘ahu’s Ala Moana Bowls, as a large Kaua‘i contingent showed their stuff in the statewide competition.
All major division finalists are then invited to participate in the Surfing America USA Championships, to be held June 18 to 25 at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Kaoli Kahukuloa took first place in two different events, winning the Boys Shortboard 14-15 final heat, as well as the Junior Men’s Longboard.
Tatiana Weston-Webb took first place in the Girls Shortboard 14-15 final, a heat that was three-quarters Kaua‘i riders.
Kaoli and Tatiana are also each part of the Team Hawai‘i junior surf team that will be in Peru later this month for the International Surfing Association World Championships.
Maluhia Kinimaka finished in third for that Girls Shortboard 14-15 final, while Lianna Patey took fourth place.
Lianna also finished in third place in the Girls Longboard final.
Kiana Fores won the Girls Shortboard 16-17 final, while Mainei Kinimaka grabbed a fourth place in the Girls 12-13 final heat.
Daniel Carter was the champ in two bodyboarding events, winning the Boys Bodyboarding final heat, as well as the Drop Knee final.
He was joined in the Boys Bodyboarding final by Eli Duar, who took fourth place. In the Drop Knee, Storm Magsanay took fifth place, placing in the final heat in three separate events. Storm also took third place in the Launch division, as well as fourth in the Junior Men’s Bodyboard final.
Gavin Klein made his way into three separate finals, taking second place in the Men’s Shortboard final, fourth in the Open Shortboard final and fourth in the Men’s Longboard final.
Luke Hitchcock too sixth place in the Open Shortboard division, while Josh Rex and Chatson Barrett took fifth and sixth place, respectively, in the Men’s Shortboard final.
Richard Patey came home with two titles and three final heat appearances, grabbing first place in both the Senior Men’s Longboard and Open Longboard divisions. He also took third place in the Senior Men’s Shortboard final, while Miguel Graham took sixth in the same division.
The Hawai‘i Surfing Federation Kaua‘i organization had four events throughout the 2010-11 season, with participants accumulating points at each stop across the island. Those with top scores at the end of the season were then eligible for the state event.
