Yasmine Ware, 14, finished first and Kate Machorek, 13, notched third place to lead the Swim Kaua‘i Aquatics contingent to an overall 6th place out of 22 teams at the 31st Annual Harry Mamizuka Invitational swim meet in Manoa, O‘ahu, recently.
Ware finished soared to first place with 72 points over eight events in the 13-14 age group, finishing in a tie for overall Female High Point honors.
“She clinched first in every individual event she competed in,” said Stacey Machorek in an SKA release. “Kate’s times in the 100 Meter Backstroke (1:13.36) and the 200 Meter Backstroke (2:32.56) captured second place behind Ware, Kate finishing in the Top 5 of every event.”
Anya Littlefield, 17, earned second place in the Women’s Open (17-18 age group) and followed that with first finishes in the 50 Meter Freestyle (30.34) and the 200 Meter Freestyle, ending the meet in the Top 5 of all her events.
Littlefield anchored the Girls 400 Meter Medley Relay team, moving the team from fourth place to second place in the final 25 meters, according to the SKA release.
Joining Littlefield, the team was made up of Kate Machorek, Ware and Tambrina Fairbanks who finished sixth in the 200 Meter Breastroke (3:09.74) and seventh in the 100 Meter Breaststroke (1:31.36).
“The kids swam so enthusiastically as they were winning heat after heat, with several great finishes,” said SKA coach Billy Brown who arrived after getting the Kaua‘i Loves You triathlon off on its start. “We had our smallest team ever at this meet, yet still tied our highest placing. I’m really proud of all these kids.”
Ava Wagner, 12, was experiencing her first Invitational meet and put up some great times, taking almost six seconds off her seeded time in the 100 Meter Breaststroke, touching with a 1:42.35 swim.
Jack Machorek, 10, finished eighth overall in the 10 and Under division, his best event coming in the 50 Meter Breaststroke where he touched with a 47.01 swim for second place.
Dutch Fairbanks, 10, shared the pool with Jack, finishing 11th overall in the 10 and Under division with his success coming in the freestyle events where he placed sixth in the 100 Meter Freestyle (1:20.54) and seventh in the 200 Meter Freestyle (3:04.12).
Saber Fairbanks, 12, had his best event in the 100 Meter Breaststroke where he came from the outside in Lane 1 to win the swim on a 1:43.54.
Tyler Keith, 14, and Quinn Hannah-White, 14, part of the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation men’s champion team from Island School, worked hard, Keith scoring points on his 8th finish in the 100 Meter Freestyle (1:04.82) and Hannah-White getting a great drop in the 200 Meter Freestyle where he touched on a 2:24.27 swim.
Zach Safford, 11, and Kaz Tasic, 16, were each experiencing their first Invitational, Safford piling up five new personal bests while Tasic was perfect with new personal best times in all of his events.
Brown said this was probably the busiest weekend for SKA swimmers with half the team working at the Kaua‘i Loves You triathlon and 13 swimmers, parents and coaches competing on O‘ahu.
SKA swimmers will be in the water at the YMCA pool, May 14 for its home meet.
