It has been nearly six decades since the romantic comedy — now known as a “chick flick” — was created with Audrey Hepburn in “Romany Holiday” (1953), which from Wailua, Hawai‘i to the heart of NYC touches the hearts of most females I meet. In 1989, writer-director Cameron Crowe gave us “Say Anything” with John Cusack (“High Fidelity”), and that was the last time an original movie was made in this genre. We all know how these films end and most of the time we’re left thinking “why didn’t I wait until it hit DVD?”
I have a small bias towards this film because I love Kate Hudson; this movie was made in Manhattan and right now I’m in Manhattan, but that is what makes this film special for you. If you’ve ever wanted to go to NYC and don’t have the money, now you do. I loved this film because it absolutely captured the beautiful parks and endless streets, and the characters were exactly like so many people I’ve seen, heard and met here. This is the first film I watched about a specific area and type of girl. While watching it in that area with a theatre full of the girls portrayed on screen. It was surreal.
I have good news for you guys, this is more then a date movie. Kate Hudson is magnificent and Ginnifer Goodwin (“Walk the Line”) is amazing as well. The plot is simple: Darcy (Hudson) and Rachel’s (Goodwin) friendship is tested and secrets come to the surface when the terminally single Rachel falls for Darcy’s fiancé.
The film mixes comedy, drama, romance and classic movies, yet comes off like an independent film. The film’s irony is the title, “Something Borrowed,” because it takes from numerous classic movies from its genre like “Say Anything”, “Some Kind of Wonderful” and “When Harry Met Sally,” all of which are ‘80s movies. The costumes, set design and cinematography bring the viewer the true beauty of NYC. There were even scenes shot in a park I was in the day before; it was wonderful.
I know we all waited or are waiting to see Pirates 4 to see our beloved Kaua‘i, so for me this was a thrilling film experience. I didn’t wait for 18 months, I experienced it around me. I won’t even bother offering my seal of approval rating, because it goes without saying. However, I will say two things: Aloha from NYC and “See you at the movies”
