Island School third graders took over Kaua‘i County Council’s special budget meeting on Wednesday. Throughout the year, instructor Lyda Liesse has taught the class about communities. The class created its own city on paper on a large bulletin-board and included city planners, engineers and construction crews. Then they created the people and families that live in the community with puppets. They gave each puppet a family, a personal history, an ethnic background, a job and volunteer work that will help the community. Government studies is the last trimester in the final section, and they elect a mayor and city council to run the city. ‘Now that the class has visited the mayor and the County Council, they will conduct their own council meeting and decide on a problem they can change in their made-up community,’ Liesse said. ‘The last assignment will be to implement their plan for change.’ At County Council’s table from left to right: Kaeo Rezentes, Kiilani Arruda, Malia Splittstosser, Brianna Ryan, Tristan Temme, Rachel Dressler and instructor Lynda Liesse standing among the temporarily displaced council members.
