LIHU‘E — The conference champs got some more recognition as the Waimea Lady Menehune received eight of the 11 softball All-Star nods, which were released Wednesday by the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation.
Waimea pitcher Michelle “Shelly” Koerte was named Player of the Year. The senior also took the All-Star pitcher slot.
Junior catcher Taylor Ephan, senior first baseman Davelynn Tafiti, sophomore second baseman Krysta Kali and sophomore shortstop Gaylan “Ulu” Matagiese comprised four-fifths of the infield, while Kaua‘i Red Raider senior Melia Aki took the third base spot.
In the outfield, Waimea freshman Sienna Santiago was joined by Kaua‘i seniors Adrianna Medeiros and Brianne Hornos.
Waimea freshman Alyssa Jardin took the utility spot.
Having won the KIF title in an 11-7 championship game victory over Kaua‘i, Waimea coach Teddy Perreira was named Coach of the Year.
Entering the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II Softball Championships as the No. 2 seed, Waimea fell in the semifinals, 5-0 to No. 3 Kahuku.
