KEKAHA — A man who hurt his head during a single-vehicle crash in Kekaha Sunday night is suspected of drinking and driving.
At about 6 p.m., a Mazda van, driven by 25-year-old Eric K. Morris Jr., was headed east on Kaumuali‘i Highway, near Kiowea Road, when Morris lost control of the vehicle, a county press release states.
The van veered off the road then hit an embankment, causing it to strike some trees before landing in the yard of a private home, according to preliminary reports.
Fire rescuers used the Jaws of Life to remove Morris from the van. Medics took him to Kaua‘i Veterans Memorial Hospital for treatment of head injuries.
Morris did not have any passengers in his vehicle at the time of the incident.
Police contend that they detected alcohol on the driver’s breath, prompting officers to have his blood-alcohol level tested, the release states. Morris was subsequently issued a complaint and summons for operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicants. His court date is pending.
A portion of Kaumuali‘i Highway was closed down between Aukuu and Akepa Roads for about 25 minutes while officers conducted the initial investigation.
