Cyclists will leave Kekaha starting at 8 a.m., Sunday and traverse a 16-mile, 3,800-foot climb, ending at the Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in the Koke‘e State Park, the route skirting canyons as it winds through the cool uplands past Waipo‘o Falls and into forests of koa and ohia.
Organizers said this year marks the second year for the race which attracted more than 90 cyclists last year.
They encourage motorists and fans to use the Waimea road to Koke‘e, and exercise alertness, care and consideration — especially on blind corners, narrow spots, intersections and at the entrance to the meadow near the Koke‘e Museum.
Organizers also encourage fans to be in place before the cyclists pass, keeping cars, pets and waving arms completely out of the road.
All of the islands in Hawai‘i had an official hill climb race except Kaua‘i, a release from the Pedal organizers states. That was until the Pedal to the Meadow.

The finish line is close to the Koke‘e Museum’s annual Banana Poka Round-Up, an eco-awareness forest education fair in the Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow and cyclists and their entourage can enjoy the festival’s music, food, exhibits after crossing the finish line.
