WAILUA — County officials announced that the Lydgate Park ponds were reopened Friday afternoon, just in time for Memorial Day weekend, a county press release stated.
The ponds had been closed for eight weeks for restoration. The majority of the work is complete; all that remains is the re-planting of grass on a portion of the beach.
The scope of work for the project included dredging the large pond to increase depth from about 3 1/2 feet to between seven and nine feet, removal of the excavated sand, placing boulders that fell inside the pond back in original positions along the border, and removal of the debris that spilled into the ponds during a recent storm.
The Lydgate ponds were built in 1964 to provide residents and visitors with a year-round protected area for swimming, the release stated.
Goodfellow Brothers was awarded a $274,450 contract for the restoration project, according to the release.
